vertical zoo

location: Buenos Aires, Argentina

A landmark in a forest of skyscrapers is usually a particular or a very tall element. The skyline of Buenos Aires seen from the ecological garden is dominated by vertical lines. Another vertical line would blend in too easily and the idea is the opposite; to expose a particular and unusual shape. Our building should be the opposite of the city that is why it is a sphere. A 100 meter tall “green” sphere should be strong enough to fight back and become the new identity of the ecological reserve and to give a new perception of the city. Our answer is a light structure that barely touches the ground of the protected reserve in four points. It should be as light as a dandelion. It will become not only the house for the animals but also for a great diversity of vegetation. The sphere is open and has a transparent structure in order to give the impression of an infinite space. Our animals will not feel behind bars, closed, they must not feel the difference between their new home and the old one. You can be in any place on this structure, as human or animal, and have an instant perception of the whole garden just by turning your head. There are no physical limits. The voids that permit the transparency and the infiltration of light are our limits. Humans will be able to interact visually and in some cases physically with the animals; each of them can chose if they are in the mood of showing themselves or not. As a visitor you will feel the wild life as close as never before. We think it is important that you are surprised by the presence of an animal when you are less expected. Each animal as well as human will benefit of their own kind of shelter; the animals can retreat in their shelters built in the width of the structure and humans have all the facilities in the sphere situated in the core. The new building should be the new guide for the development of the whole green area.
